Master Bedroom, Bath, and Closet

This is the second room of the overall interior remodel, and it's a complete revamp.

The blue carpeting and all of the bathroom tile is coming out, including the shower floor and walls. The closet it also going to be stripped back to bare walls in preparation for installation of a new closet system from Easy Closets.

Once the demo is complete, the shower will be redone with a moss green tile on the walls and a red stone mosaic tile on the shower floor. There will be one or two rows of matching mosaic trim around the shower walls, too. I will upgrade the lighting in the bathroom, as well, installing two recessed lights in the shower and one to replace the ugly existing fixture.

Outside of the shower will be a paver stone-look tile extending out to the vanity area and into the closet. This establishes a visual separation between the bathroom area and the bedroom proper. The bathroom, vanity area, and closet will be painted in Silver Strand. I may paint the door wall in the bathroom in Carnelian. That will be a sort of hidden surprise until you walk into that room.

The vanity has to be replaced, which is problematic. I am struggling to find a 54" built-in vanity to fit the space and my budget. I may end up using customized kitchen cabinets to fabricate a vanity. I've priced that out down below in the Materials list. I also want to replace the existing wall-mounted light above the vanity with two recessed ceiling lights. That way, I can raise the mirror up to an appropriate height.

The Easy Closet system will be installed, with two levels of hanging clothes on the left, a tall, narrow shelf unit on the back wall, and shelves and drawers on the right. Plenty of room for everything, and the drawers in the closet unit means I can get rid of the dresser in the bedroom. It'll be a shift in where some clothes and things are stored, but the bedroom will seem much bigger without that dresser in the corner. Nice and open.

The window must also be replaced and, once again, all of the trim in the room redone in a craftsman style. Hefty five-inch baseboards, bold white window casings, and maybe a cove around the walls at the level of the low point of the sloping ceiling. I'm thinking of using interior shutters to cover the window, rather than some sort of drapes, shades, or blinds. I think shutters will work very well with the look and feel of the trim.

All of the walls in the bedroom will be painted Attitude Gray (SW 7060), but I may paint the the outside wall of the closet in the dark maroon called Carnelian (SW 7580). Once again, the trim will be painted Pure White (SW 7055). It will be beautiful!

After that work, there will be several months of no work, allowing me to pay off some of the debt before incurring more, and using up more of my modest HELOC credit. The next steps will be to do the kitchen and living rooms. As always, that's another project and another page. Two more pages, actually.

Before Pics

I placed the order for my EasyClosets kit on Sunday, May 1st and everything — all 17 boxes! — arrived on Friday, May 6th. I took the day off to get things ready in the closet and to get the entire thing installed over the weekend. It all went relatively smoothly, despite the fact that EasyClosets had left out some vital pieces. Those were shipped overnight, so I got the pieces on Saturday and finished the install. You can see from the photo below that it looks really nice. I thought about getting some additional lighting for the closet, but it's not at all necessary. Because I put drawers in the closet, I was able to get rid of the dresser in the bedroom itself, so the room feels bigger.
