Fence
The only thing I know right now is that I'd like to have steel-framed corrugated metal fencing installed on the east and west sides of the house. On the east, I only have 20 feet of fencing. On the west, the length of the fence is around 70 feet, including the return to the house. There will have to be a gate installed in that return section. I'm hoping that I can share the cost of both the east and west fences fifty-fifty with the respective neighbors. Of course, they're going to have to agree to the corrugated fencing. I just think it's prettier than concrete block, just as easy to maintain, and much cheaper.
If the neighbors don't go for the corrugated fence, the costs will likely triple and we'll end up with concrete block. I'd also have to make the neighbor to the east cut down a tree to accommodate a concrete block wall.
As far as the fence along the back, I may or may not put one up. I like having the unrestricted view back there. At least until houses are built in that long-stalled development. At that point, I'd likely put up a four-foot corrugated fence.
Sean Casey and Jill Dickman (my old neighbor and still owner of her half of the duplex) and I put up the structure of the fence on March 12th and 13th. Sean had actually been out earlier, tore down the old fence, drilled the holes for the posts, and did some other preliminary work a few days earlier. The structure went up in just a few hours, using 4x4s for the posts and 2x4s for the stringers. Very easy, considering.
Sean then came out on March 20th and 21st and put up all of the corrugated steel by himself — Jill surely helped — but it all happened while I was out backpacking or at work. How great was that! I just had to pay for the materials and put in a couple hours worth of work. I love the new fence!
At this point, I only have the 20 feet separating my house from Jill's replaced with my hoped-for corrugated fencing. I'm hoping to convince Deborah to replace the 60 feet separating our properties with the same type of fence. It really looks nice. I also have to get rid of my old shed before I can get that fence up. I'll likely have to pay someone to tear that down and haul it away for me.
